Honoring Our Alumni: Debbie Ortiz’s Breast Cancer Survivor Story
Hello, I’m Debra Ortiz, also known as Debbie, a 43-year-old breast cancer survivor. It all began when I went for my annual mammogram on December 16, 2023. As someone in the medical field, alarm bells started ringing in my head, my thoughts racing in a million different directions. Having lost my mother to stomach cancer at the young age of 35, when I was only 13, I couldn’t help but fear the worst. At the doctor’s office, the grim reality set in as I was told that I had breast cancer. In that moment, the world seemed to stop, and a heavy weight crushed my chest.

After learning I had stage one ductal carcinoma of the breast, the options were laid out before me-lumpectomy, double mastectomy, radiation, and chemotherapy. The decision to undergo a double mastectomy was not easy, but with the unwavering support of my family, I made my choice. The road to recovery was long and arduous, with constant pain and challenges to overcome. With the love and support of my family and friends, I pressed on, seeking solace in the strength they provided. As I received the news that my lymph nodes were clear and the margins were clean, a sense of relief washed over me. To all the women out there, I urge you to prioritize your health and get regular check-ups. It could truly save your life.
“A belief is not merely an idea the mind possesses; it is an idea that possesses the mind.”
