A historical photo of Ansetta de Chabert, a prominent Virgin Islands entrepreneur.

Ansetta de Chabert’s success as one of the Virgin Islands’ most accomplished entrepreneurs can be attributed, in part, to the influence of her father. Born in Christiansted in 1908, she grew up learning the intricacies of business from him, a successful merchant who operated “The Little Red Shop.”

After marrying Ralph D. de Chabert, a distinguished civil servant, the couple embarked on a series of strategic land acquisitions. It was after her husband’s passing in 1955, however, that Ansetta de Chabert truly demonstrated her independent business acumen. She not only maintained but expanded the family’s enterprises. Among her most notable achievements was the development of the Sunny Isle Shopping Center, which remains a vital hub of economic activity in St. Croix to this day.

Beyond business, Ansetta de Chabert dedicated herself to public service, becoming a member of the Virgin Islands Board of Education. Through her vision, determination, and leadership, she not only built a lasting legacy but also shattered misconceptions about women’s capabilities in business and governance.
